The Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre is Aotearoa New Zealand's leading contemporary art museum and the home of the internationally acclaimed Len Lye Centre. Situated in the heart of Taranaki, this whare toi celebrates toi tūroa and toi hou, offering innovative exhibitions and kaupapa ako that inspire and connect our hapori. Guided by Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the gallery is a vibrant hub where Te Ao Māori and contemporary art converge, fostering creativity, learning, and whanaungatanga.
The Opportunity | Te āheinga
This is a permanent, part-time role (16 hours per week) for someone passionate about connecting tamariki, rangatahi and whānau with the arts through Te Ao Māori and Te Reo Māori.
As Pouako Ara Māori at the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre, you’ll be part of the Public Practice and Creative Enquiry team, playing a key role within our Learning Team. You will develop, promote, and deliver engaging education programmes grounded in Toi Māori research and industry best practice, ensuring they are contemporary, relevant and inspiring for kōpae, kura kaupapa, bilingual and mainstream education groups.
This role is also about strengthening connections - working alongside iwi, hapū and whānau to create learning experiences that honour Te Tiriti values and are meaningful, inclusive, welcoming and safe. Alongside programme delivery, you’ll contribute to strategic planning and help achieve key learning and engagement outcomes for the Gallery.
Key Responsibilities | Ngā haepapa matua
Deliver engaging, best-practice education programmes in collaboration with the Creative Enquiry team for diverse learners (ākonga, tamariki, rangatahi, whānau).
Build and maintain partnerships with kōpae, kura kaupapa, bilingual and mainstream education groups with a strong Te Reo Māori and Ao Māori focus.
Facilitate learning experiences across Gallery, Museum, Libraries and offsite locations, actively engaging young people with exhibitions and collections.
Develop Te Reo Māori educational resources and contribute to inclusive, community-centred programme content.
Ensure programmes are well planned, delivered on time, within budget, and aligned with Council policies and processes.
Uphold tikanga and manaakitanga, working closely with Māori colleagues, iwi, hapū, artists and advisors.
Monitor programme performance, manage reporting and compliance (including Health & Safety and relevant legislation), and drive continuous improvement.
Essential Skills and Experience | Ngā pūkenga me ngā wheako
Whakapapa Māori and effective communicator in Te Reo Māori or Te Reo o Taranaki.
Experience in planning and implementing arts education programmes for young people
Tertiary learning/teaching qualification or relative teaching experience
Knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and NZ School Curriculum and teaching methods.
Knowledge of Ngā Toi Māori.
This role is considered a children’s worker role and will be subject to safety checking as part of the Children’s Act 2014.
