ABOUT THE ROLE
The role of Head of Communications & Engagement sits at the heart of Greenpeace Aotearoa’s work. It leads our organisation-wide communications and public engagement strategy and delivery. This pivotal leadership role shapes how we tell our stories, build relationships with supporters, and engage the public in our campaigns for a greener, fairer world. You’ll lead a skilled and creative team, driving integrated strategies across media, digital, content, and supporter engagement and mobilisation. You'll ensure our voice is bold, authentic, and inclusive, reaching audiences across Aotearoa and beyond to inspire action. While there is a strong leadership and management component of this role, you’ll need to be able to get stuck in with delivery.
This is a unique opportunity to join Greenpeace Aotearoa in a 12 months fixed term contract to provide cover for our long-standing head of communications & engagement while they are away on secondment. It’s an opportunity to learn from our team, while leaving your mark on the work of Greenpeace Aotearoa.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading strategic, multi-channel communications and engagement strategies
Managing a high-performing team and cross-functional collaboration
Overseeing media output and relations, narrative development and crisis comms
Driving digital engagement, including social, email, SEO, petitions, and supporter journeys
Championing Te Tiriti o Waitangi through our communications
Keeping a pulse on current events, campaign issues and responsive opportunities
ABOUT YOU
You’re a creative, dynamic communicator and an inclusive leader who thrives in fast-paced, purpose-driven environments. You’ve had experience working in campaigning or advocacy organisations delivering values-based communications to create change. Whether you're writing a compelling campaign message, mentoring your team, or coordinating across departments. You bring vision, creativity and are happy to get stuck in with delivering the work when needed.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE
At least 5 years experience in progressive communications roles, with management and leadership experience in a nonprofit or mission-driven organisation.
Demonstrated success in elevating a nonprofit brand and advancing strategic initiatives through communications.
Relevant tertiary qualification would be useful but not required.
Proficiency in te reo Māori and experience partnering with Māori stakeholders would be advantageous

When you work for Greenpeace Aotearoa, you join a global network of people fighting to protect the environment for future generations to come.
This is a 12 month fixed-term, full-time position (37.5hrs per week) based in Tāmaki Makaurau.
Our salaries are competitive within the not-for-profit sector and the range for this role is $110,000 - $120,000. A competitive signing bonus will be offered to the successful candidate as part of the overall compensation package.
