We are looking for a Senior Advisor, Māori to join Te Hunga Whiriwhiri (Māori Outcomes Group) at Greater Wellington. As a member of Te Hunga Whiriwhiri, you will be instrumental in contributing to transformative approaches, developing culturally appropriate policies and strategies, and leading the design and implementation of frameworks and programs to ensure Greater Wellington's commitment as a good Tiriti partner. This permanent role is based in our central Wellington office but will work across the region.

You’ll be joining a team committed to fostering equitable partnerships and achieving better outcomes for mana whenua and Māori communities. Your expertise and dedication will make a tangible difference in creating a sustainable and inclusive future for the Greater Wellington region.

About the role:

Within the council, Te Hunga Whiriwhiri rōpū embrace their privileged role upholding Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the values of the partnership between Greater Wellington and mana whenua in the region. They provide support and advice on governance relationships, strategic and operational leadership, policy and planning which unlocks the potential of Māori communities, effective communication and engagement with Māori and leadership on te reo, tikanga and mātauranga Māori.

As Senior Advisor Māori, you will work closely with Directors and Managers, to ensure the integration of mana whenua aspirations into strategy, policy, systems, and operational functions. You will provide specialist guidance across diverse projects, embedding te reo, tikanga, and te ao Māori throughout the organisation to achieve the outcomes in Te Whāriki, The Māori outcomes framework.

Skills and experience required:

As a current Senior Advisor, you will be a champion of best practice in relevant areas to enable Tiriti-centric practice through:

·                     Excellent written communication skills including analysis and report writing

·                     Strong planning and project management experience with a track record of delivery

·                     Expertise in policy development and analysis

·                     Knowledge of relevant legislation like the Local Government Act and the Resource Management Act

Alongside this, you will be kaupapa driven with a deep understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and kaupapa Māori, rangatiratanga and mana motuhake as it relates to local government functions. A relevant qualification in public policy, social research, or Māori studies or equivalent experience is strongly desired. Demonstrated leadership in policy and planning projects, intellectual agility, strong communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams are essential.
