This is a rare opportunity to join one of the longest established research and analysis teams in the public sector. The Tertiary System Performance Analysis team in the Tertiary and Evidence Group is looking for a Principal Research Analyst to join on a permanent basis. 

This role would suit someone who has successfully delivered high quality social research using advanced quantitative methodologies. The role offers the opportunity to step up into strategic leadership and influence tertiary education policy and practice through high-quality research and evidence. 

You will play a key role in supporting the team to deliver on the research and information priorities for tertiary education. You will take a lead in supporting the team to develop a culture of learning and improvement and look for opportunities for development and innovation. You will need to maintain strong relationships within the Tertiary and Evidence Group, with other parts of the Ministry and other education agencies. 

You will be able to work flexibly across the varied work of the team, building and maintaining a breadth of understanding to be able to step in when needed. This includes overseeing projects and mentoring and leading others within a supportive and fun team environment. 

Salary range: $119,171 - $144,560 per annum plus KiwiSaver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake 

We are looking for a committed and experienced Principal Research Analyst with proven experience in tertiary education research who will be able to hit the ground running and bring passion, energy and analytical ability. We’re keen to hear from you if you have:

  • Successfully delivered high quality social research using advanced quantitative methodologies

  • Demonstrated problem solving, numeracy and analytical skills and experience, and ability to provide innovative solutions to previously unsolved problems

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex or technical information to a non-technical or general audience

  • Demonstrated ability to influence others through the use of evidence

  • A track record of bringing people together and leading, coaching and mentoring others to achieve outcomes

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills

  • A commitment to supporting a culture of learning and improvement

  • Strong organisational and planning skills and the ability to manage multiple competing demands

  • Knowledge and experience in the tertiary education sector would be an advantage>

  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.

 

About our group and team | Mātau rōpū ake 

The Tertiary System Performance Analysis team supports tertiary education policy with relevant, quality and timely evidence and data on the tertiary education system. The work programme includes analytical support for policy work, more in-depth analytical research pieces, regular statistical reporting and monitoring of sector performance, and forecasts and models to inform budgets and costings. It spans all aspects of the tertiary education system including access, achievement, investment, quality, and post-study outcomes, often focusing on key population and learner groups. 

The Tertiary and Evidence group leads interesting and challenging work programmes aimed at strengthening tertiary education at a systems level to ensure that it is inclusive, responsive, and delivers equitable outcomes for all learner groups. The Ministry’s role in tertiary education policy offers exciting challenges for policy professionals, including advising on the design of a new tertiary education strategy and how to give effect to Ministerial priorities across tertiary education portfolios. Our work sits across social and economic policy, and we work closely with other government agencies including TEC, NZQA, MBIE, ENZ, and others.
