The role | Te tūnga

This is a permanent role based in Christchurch or Wellington. Reporting to the Manager Research & Development Hub in the Methods & Design unit your focus is developing and improving methods to derive census like information from administrative data and providing technical leadership to one of our workstreams.  While the immediate focus will be on census, including areas such as families and households, dwellings and individuals, it is expected that our research focus will adapt in the coming years to best support the organisation, and New Zealanders.

This role would suit someone who can bring:

  • Strong analytical expertise - experience leading the development of statistical methods and resolving conceptually and technically challenging issues, preferably using large and varied administrative datasets. Can quickly pick up subject matter knowledge and become a technical leader in that area.

  • Knowledge and experience, or willingness to learn about Te Tiriti, Tikanga, Te Reo and Te Ao Māori, and apply it to our work.

  • Strong communication and influencing skills - ability to explain complex methodologies and support informed decision making. A proven track record of relationship building and navigating ambiguity with confidence.

  • Project and workstream leadership - examples where you've demonstrated leadership, e.g.  coached and lifted others up, led by example, demonstrated problem solving, owned a project or piece of work, supported others through challenging technical work to deliver timely high quality research outcomes, spoken up for yourself or others.

  • Efficient coding skills honed while performing data analysis using R, Python, SAS or SQL.

  • Experience in a similar role that included a large component of delivering projects of a statistical or technical nature, and experience in paper publication processes.

  • Experience working with, or knowledge of administrative data in the Integrated Data Infrastructure in New Zealand is an advantage.

What you bring | Nōu te rourou

We understand transferable skills can come from experience gained from outside of work. We encourage you to be you in your application.

We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and lifting our cultural capability. You don't need to be knowledgeable in all these areas already, but you do need to be on board with learning and have a genuine interest and willingness to grow on this journey with us.

Tell us about yourself in your cover letter, what attracted you to this role, and what you would bring to Stats NZ.
