The role | Te tūnga

This role is particularly exciting as it is part of a new team, with a new mandate (centralised procurement and contract management), helping Stats NZ to deliver new approaches to "unleash the power of data to change lives, which will enable data-led innovation across society, the economy, and the environment.

Our Commercial Team partners with major Stats NZ programmes and business units to source and manage contracted delivery—especially for data and tech solutions. It's fast-paced, varied work where we balance getting things done with offering smart, strategic delivery.

We're looking for a skilled senior commercial specialist to help source and manage technology services, ICT licensing, and a range of related commercial agreements that support how we collect, manage, and share data across Aotearoa. This includes ICT related 'as a service' agreements, licensing agreements, ICT support agreements, specialist resourcing, and outsourced 'design and build' projects—plus some non-tech arrangements too.

You'll be hands-on in both day-to-day delivery and long-term planning. We pride ourselves on high standards, practical thinking, and being a team others enjoy working with. As part of our new centre-led procurement and contracts model, you'll also help introduce and shape how we deliver excellent commercial services to stakeholders across Stats NZ.

Although, we are ideally seeking a seasoned candidate, we may consider candidates newer in their careers, with less experience, but who can demonstrate they are looking to deepen their skills and experience and are willing to put in the time and effort to do this.

This is a Wellington based opportunity, with the expectation that work will be mainly office based with our stakeholders.

What you bring | Nōu te rourou

We understand transferable skills can come from experience gained from outside of work. We encourage you to be you in your application.

We are committed to diversity, equity, inclusion and lifting our cultural capability. You don't need to be knowledgeable in all these areas already, but you do need to be on board with learning and have a genuine interest and willingness to grow on this journey with us.

Tell us about yourself in your cover letter, what attracted you to this role, and what you would bring to Stats NZ.

No two days will be the same.  There will be lots of job variety.  On a day-to-day basis you could be:

  • Delivering commercial plans and strategies, category management and contract management plans, and strategic sourcing activities

  • Work closely with the Commercial Lead, key IT Managers and Managers in our Collections (of data) functions to deliver shared outcomes.

  • Reporting progress to project boards, as well as identifying and managing commercial risk.

  • Working on a wide range of services, including major SaaS products, data acquisition methods, and sourcing specialist expertise, as well as related non-ICT procurement and contracts.

We're after someone with a strong background in government procurement and contract management, with relevant technology experience, who's keen to get stuck-in and lead or support key pieces of work.

Specifically, you'll have solid experience with New Zealand Government procurement, including contract development, negotiation, and ongoing vendor management

  • Bring a good understanding of technology and licensing arrangements, or a willingness to develop that knowledge quickly and a track record to support this

  • Be confident working across both strategic and operational levels - note, around 75% of this role is hands-on 'doing'

  • Be confident to manage contractual and performance conversations with vendors

  • Be confident managing commercial, reputational and legal risks

  • Value clear, concise, evidence-based documentation as a core part of how we deliver high quality work

  • Work as part that works collaboratively, with shared outcomes

  • Contribute to a collaborative team culture and take ownership of your part in delivering shared outcomes

You can expect:

  • A team environment that values excellence, delivery, integrity, and working together

  • A variety of work across modern (and legacy) ICT and enabling services

  • A mix of project-based and BAU work, keeping things interesting and current

  • Strong support for professional growth
