Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Head of Māori-Crown Relations leads the strategic direction, frameworks and work programme to strengthen Māori-Crown relationships across the housing and urban development system, to deliver on Government priorities and achieve positive housing outcomes with and for iwi Māori.
A key focus of this role will be to strengthen Māori-Crown relationships across the system by leading work with other relevant agencies to streamline the complex housing landscape by creating a consolidated system-wide approach to Māori Crown relationships.
The Head of Māori-Crown Relations leads a team of specialists to provide strategic advice and analysis around the Māori-Crown relationship and the Treaty of Waitangi | Te Tiriti o Waitangi for the Ministry, and lead work so that HUD understands and upholds its Treaty commitments.
This role sits within the Ministry Te Kāhui, Māori Housing Group, reporting to the Deputy Chief Executive Māori-Crown Relations.
The salary range for this role is $182k - $225k + 3% Kiwisaver contribution.
This is a Wellington based role.

To be successful in this role, you will have:
• Significant senior leadership experience, with demonstrated experience driving strategy, and developing and implementing work programmes ideally in the public service
• Highly proficient in Te Reo Māori me ona tikanga, with an ability to operate with ease in Te Ao Māori and have proven relationships and skills to support this
• Significant experience in Māori-Crown relationships at a system and strategic level, including depth of expertise in Te Tiriti o Waitangi | Treaty of Waitangi
• Excellent business and commercial acumen, with demonstrable experience developing and delivering strategic and operational plans and driving organisational change
• A proven ability to make quality decisions across your area of responsibility, and build and maintain systems, frameworks and processes that enable the organisation to deliver on Government expectations
• Significant experience building and leading inclusive and diverse teams, and creating a safe, positive, and thriving workplace environment
• A proven track record of working effectively with and maintaining the trust of colleagues, other senior officials and Ministers where appropriate
• A reputation for political awareness, sound knowledge of government processes (including those relating to legislation, policy and programme system levers), and proven ability to achieve the right results in a political environment.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with proven experience building and leveraging strategic relationships and partnerships across the public and private sectors to achieve shared outcomes
