We are looking for a Poutoko Ture Mātāmua (Principal Solicitor) with corporate / commercial expertise to join Te Puna Rōia (the Legal team) at Te Tai Ōhanga.

You will have commercial or corporate law experience and wish to apply your expertise to public sector transactions and issues.

Te Tai Ōhanga is the government's lead economic and financial advisor. Our vision is to be a world leading Treasury working towards higher living standards for New Zealanders.

Te Puna Rōia (the Legal team) contributes to the Treasury's vision by providing robust and solutions-focused legal advice to effectively manage legal risk and implement projects. The Legal team works closely with policy and operational teams across the department to advise on a range of public and commercial law matters.


Mō te Tūnga | About the role

This is a specialist technical role within the Treasury. The Poutoko Ture Mātāmua (Principal Solicitor) will have both a strategic level of responsibility and technical leadership role in the legal team to provide legal advice and services for the Treasury. They:
• are expected to be technical leaders, leading and driving the most team's most complex work programmes.
• be a centre of expertise for other members of the team have a role coaching and mentoring other members of the team.

Te Puna Rōia (the Legal team)'s work is very diverse and you will support internal clients on a wide range of issues. As Principal Solicitor, Commercial & Finance you will provide oral and written advice on various matters, including on:
o Commercial transactions and / or commercial and corporate law issues, as they intersect with the activities and statutory obligations of Ministers, the Treasury, Crown-owned companies and Crown entities
o Legislation that the Treasury administers
o Various forms of contracts and agreements
o The Crown-Māori relationship and its implications for the Treasury's work.
o A wide range of other legal matters relevant to Te Tai Ohanga's work

He kōrero mōu | About You

To be successful in this role you will have:
• Experience providing legal advice on complex commercial and/or corporate law matters
• A strong focus on client service, problem-solving and solutions
• Experience working with public sector clients (or who wishes to apply their expertise to public sector issues and transactions).
• The ability to play a role coaching and supervising more junior team members (including at times peer reviewing their advice)
• Knowledge of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/ the Treaty of Waitangi and / or a commitment to build Te Tiriti competency and te Reo Māori capability
• Law degree and hold, or eligible to hold, a practising certificate and At least 10 years' experience as a lawyer
• Ability to meet the criteria required to hold a NZ Government security clearance.
