The role | Te tūnga
This role is fixed term for 12 months based in Wellington working within our Security By Design programme. Reporting to the Head of ICT Architecture your focus is developing, leading, and managing security-domain, cross-domain and cross-functional solution architectures. You'll have input to strategic discussions regarding Stats NZ's enterprise architecture, production implementation planning, and transitioning, and build strong relationships with all enterprise architecture team members. Your team includes a talented group of architects who are responsible for the IT architecture of the enterprise.
This role would suit someone who can bring:
Strategic and visionary thinking, with the ability to lead solution architecture conversations at an organisational and sector level.
Deep security expertise in:
Designing and delivering solutions that align with Stats NZ's strategic goals, ICT Action Plan, and common capability directives.
Enabling DevSecOps principles (primarily focused within an Azure environment)
Implementing Certification & Accreditation sponsored controls (at an enterprise, platform and workload level)
A collaborative and mentoring approach, sharing technical knowledge across teams and supporting the growth of other architects through coaching and guidance.
Strong communication skills, capable of translating complex architectural concepts into accessible information for diverse stakeholders.
An enterprise-wide mindset, ensuring architectural decisions balance innovation, efficiency, and long-term sustainability.
Extensive experience producing and governing architecture artefacts, frameworks, and implementation plans that enable scalable, secure, and future-ready technology environments.
Confidence navigating procurement, compliance, and governance processes, bringing architecture oversight to priority projects and investment decisions.
A commitment to building and maintaining trusted relationships, both within Stats NZ and across the wider government and data ecosystem.
Active contribution to organisational strategy and values, including a strong alignment with public service principles, cultural capability, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.
Personal integrity and professionalism, consistently demonstrating respect, accountability, responsiveness, and a commitment to wellbeing—both individually and for others.
