About this role | Mō tēnei tūranga 

We’re looking to fill two permanent, full-time positions within our School Transport Group. While our preferred locations are Otago/Southland and Auckland, we welcome applications from across the motu. 

In this role, you’ll contribute to the delivery of safe, reliable, and efficient school transport services for communities across Aotearoa. You’ll work both regionally and nationally, managing transport routes, assessing student eligibility, ensuring contract compliance, and leading route reviews to improve service delivery. 

This is a highly collaborative role, involving regular engagement with schools, transport providers, communities, and internal Ministry teams. You’ll be part of a team that values partnership, continuous improvement, and equity in access to education. 

Key responsibilities include: 

  • Managing and reviewing school transport routes to ensure they meet policy and operational requirements

  • Assessing student eligibility for transport assistance in line with Ministry guidelines

  • Monitoring and supporting contract compliance with transport providers

  • Leading route reviews and contributing to service improvements

  • Building and maintaining strong relationships with schools, communities, and stakeholders

  • Collaborating with internal teams to align transport services with broader education outcomes.

Salary range: $85,225 - $94,148 per annum + 3% kiwi saver. The successful candidate will be appointed at a salary which reflects individual skills and experience.

About you | Mōhou ake 

We’re looking for someone who is naturally curious, quick to learn, and confident navigating technology. You don’t need extensive experience, what matters most is your ability to think critically, follow processes, and adapt to new systems and information

If you enjoy solving problems, learning on the go, and working in a structured environment, we’d love to hear from you. 

You will bring: 

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to resolve conflict effectively

  • Confidence using data and insights to inform decisions

  • Familiarity with, or the ability to quickly learn, mapping and contract management systems

  • A high level of accuracy and attention to detail, with the ability to work independently and collaborate in a fast-paced environment

  • Knowledge of, or a willingness to develop understanding in, public transport design, stakeholder engagement, and contract management

  • An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles and a commitment to equity for Māori

  • The ability and willingness to adhere to the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct

School Transport sits within Te Pae Aronui | Operations and Integration - Te Tāhuhu o te Mātauranga | Ministry of Education, a division that brings together the power of information, insights - including whānau voice - and service design capability to help frontline groups effectively deliver today and design services tomorrow. 

School Transport is the second largest procurer of public transport services in the country (after Auckland Transport) and spends around $255m each year assisting over 100,000 ākonga to school each day.
